I will consult with you in advance to find an ideal date and time, and to ask about what you’re interested in learning so the lesson plan is relevant to your development as an artist and your lesson time is as effective as possible.
MY AREAS OF STUDY:
Here’s an overview of the specific techniques and topics I specialize in: fingerstyle guitar, arranging, accompanying other artists, phrasing, harp harmonics, syncopations, Nashville notation, intermediate theory, hybrid-picking, fingerpicking, thumbpicking, guitar pro notation, performance psychology, and social media marketing. I also have experience in music management services from various fingerstyle-related jobs in the Nashville area over the past few years, I’ve been hired for guitar tablature transcription work, I’ve interned in the Archiving department at the Country Music Hall of Fame, I contribute lesson material to Premier Guitar Magazine, and have performed and taught onstage alongside some of Nashville’s top guitarists, including John Knowles, Tommy Emmanuel, Thom Bresh, Brent Mason, Joe Robinson, etc.
MY OUTLOOK ON TEACHING:
I’m not interested in grooming you into a clone of myself or anyone else; rather, I want to help you become the best guitarist you can possibly be, so that you can forge your own unique path as a player and live out the desires of your heart — not mine. I take a pragmatic approach, and I won’t teach you something if I don’t think it will be beneficial to your learning process. I try to road test as many ideas as I can before I ever suggest them to students or peers. I also want this to be a fun, relaxed interaction. I remember taking countless types of music and sport lessons as a kid, and I remember so vividly just how nerve-wrecking they can be. I’ve also had that one teacher who nitpicked my work so much that I fell out of love with a passion for years. That is soul-crushing, and I don’t want to be that teacher to anyone; there is no reward in that for me. As a contrast, I’ve had other teachers who were so deliberate and caring with me as a student that I am still friends with them to this day, and continually revisit ideas from the foundation that they helped me build. I truly want lessons to be enjoyable. I won’t police you about what you have or haven’t finished, because sometimes life gets in the way and that’s fine; and I want you to feel comfortable making mistakes with me, because having the freedom to make mistakes is one of the fastest ways to learn what works and what doesn’t. I teach music theory primarily through songs, and I don’t bother too much with overanalyzing harmony/modes/scales when most people are interested in being able to play songs well and connect with themselves and others. I also try to give students a considerable amount of creative control in the lesson material. Theory is vital but it is a means to an end, with the end goal being an expressive, sincere musical experience; as well as a sense of consistency and self-confidence in all sorts of gig settings.
According to the Myers-Briggs test I am an INTJ, in case that helps you determine if it would be a good fit to work with me in terms of personality dynamics and communication style. I’m relatively soft-spoken, detail-oriented, and interested in abstract concepts that can be implemented usefully in the real world. I’m very southern. I’m ambitious and I like to test boundaries, but I still value time-tested ideas and traditions very highly.
I’m also just as goofy as I am sarcastic. I will ruthlessly attack an idea to test its merits, but I won’t attack someone’s character or self-worth. I welcome a sense of individualism, excellence, and free thinking in my lessons, because I find that having a solid philosophical and moral grounding goes hand in hand with optimizing creative development.
I find that students who get the most out of this lesson format are intermediate-advanced students who already have a couple moderately complicated pieces in their repertoires, although I will certainly teach beginner guitar students if they are focused and have a basic understanding of music theory and harmony. Ability to read music is welcome and encouraged, but not required.
If a Skype lesson has reached its end and I’m not satisfied with the amount of progress we’ve made, I may elect to extend the lesson if your schedule also permits because I want to ensure that you get what you pay for. I truly appreciate that you’ve chosen to take lessons with me, and I’m genuinely flattered that you’re willing to invest your time, money, and trust into the work I do.
The individual lesson package is ideal as a trial lesson. If for any reason you are unhappy with the lesson quality or feel like it’s not a good fit, I will gladly refund 100% of your purchase. (This does not apply for lesson packages, only single lesson purchases. If you ask for a refund you will receive it with no hassle, but you may not continue to book lessons after that.)
Due to logistical and security concerns, I only offer in-person lessons on a case-by-case basis and prices will vary with these. However, if I’m booked to travel and you’d like to book a lesson while I’m in your town, we may be able to make it happen!
